Hawaij Spice
Hawaij is a warming spice that means, "mixture" in Arabic. There are 2 kinds of Hawaij spice. This one is used for savory dishes such as chicken, beef, rice, and various types of curry, while the other, which contains more cinnamon and ginger, is used as a warming spice in coffee and desserts. Both are primarily used in Israeli and Yemeni cuisine.
dHawaij can be used when making lentil soup, or meat stews, and is a favorite among winter meals. Other surprising ways to use Hawaij is to mix a little bit in with a red tomato paste or tomatillo paste to use as a dipping sauce. These dipping sauces are best complimented with pickled cucumber and pickled onion. If you pickle your own vegetables, adding Hawaij to your pickled goods is a great way to add a delicious flavor boost.
